Capital District's Veggie Mobile up for international recognition

May 20, 2009 - 3:34 PM

It calls itself a produce market on wheels -- and now The Veggie Mobile is working to win votes in an international contest recognizing groups and movements that are helping people make better decisions for their own health and the health of others.

The Veggie Mobile by the Capital District Community Gardens was launched in 2007 and makes regularly scheduled stops at inner-city locations in Albany, Schenectady and Troy from Tuesday through Saturday each week.

The truck -- which runs on environmentally friendly bio-diesel fuel and powers its cooling units with solar panels atop the truck's cargo box -- converts into a small shop offering a variety of fruits and vegetables at wholesale prices.

The Veggie Mobile is now one of ten finalists in magazine Changemakers' "Designing for Better Health" competition. The $5,000 award given to the three winners would come as a welcome infusion of support for The Veggie Mobile, according to CDCG executive director Amy Klein, but the organization is especially excited about worldwide exposure and recognition.

To vote for The Veggie Mobile by May 28th, visit http://www.changemakers.net/designingforbetterhealth.
