Veggie mobile hits the Capital Region

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Carrots, green peppers, bananas, all brought to you on four wheels.

"The corner market where a lot of people do their shopping don't have fresh produce," said Amy Klein Executive Director of Capital District Community Gardens.

"And the produce is sold at whole sale cost and so it's about half the cost for what people could buy it for at the supermarket," said Klein.

But the real savings come from promoting wellness and a healthy life style.

The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control put health care costs for obesity as high as $93 billion a year.

While most Americans are living longer, healthier lives, people who live in cities or who are poor are still struggling with basic quality of life issues. Poor nutrition in the capital district is something that one group is taking aim at. As our Kim Lengle explains, they're getting world-wide attention.

"If we are able to tackle some of the these health concerns at the core of where the health problems are happening because of poor nutrition, then we wouldn't have to invest the billions and trillions of dollars on the back end when people are getting heart disease, when people are getting diabetes and when we are battling childhood obesity," said Klein.

In fact, the truck's become so popular it's just been named a finalist in a world-wide health competition.

An ounce of prevention and a whole lot of nutrition.
