SCHODACK -- Volunteers, including a group from an Albany synagogue,
gathered thousands of pounds of food for local hunger programs
during a 'gleaning' at a local farm market.
The
Farm at Kristy's Barn invited Capital District Community Gardens to
'glean' produce from its fields to benefit CDCG's Squash Hunger
program.
Gleaning involves harvesting fruit and vegetables that would
otherwise go unharvested.
Capital District Community Gardens staff members and volunteers were
joined by members of Albany's Congregation Ohav Shalom in harvesting
over 3,000 pounds of cabbage, apples and broccoli.
Squash Hunger volunteers distributed the produce to food banks and
shelters throughout the Capital District.
In addition to inviting a volunteer team to the farm for the
gleaning, Kristy's Barn was a leading supporter of the 2009 Squash
Hunger campaign, hosting a Squash Hunger donation bin from June
through October and contributing fresh produce throughout the
season.
CDCG's Squash Hunger program collects donated produce from gardeners
and farmers from June through October each year.
Since 2004, Squash Hunger has provided some of the area's neediest
residents with more than 30 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables.
More information about the Squash Hunger program is available on the
Capital District Community Gardens Web site, http://www.cdcg.org.
