Active, Outdoors

Health professionals recommend getting 30-60 minutes of physical activity five days a week to stay healthy and ward off disease. Exercise can be anything from walking to everyday activities such as GARDENING. Gardening is great for your body because of its cross training properties of weight lifting and aerobic activities.

Everyone can benefit from gardening. Gardens are a great way to get active and enjoy the fresh air. Gardening activities can be done solo or as a family. Vegetable gardens offer children the chance to be part of something that produces food for the whole family to enjoy. And because they had a hand in growing the food, children are more likely to try new vegetables and fruits.

Sunshine helps produce Vitamin D. Along with the fresh air, UV light produces Vitamin D in your body which aids in the absorption of calcium for strong bones and proper nutrition.

Children love to garden. Children of all ages love to garden because they are outdoors in a world ready to be explored. Gardens offer structure for learning plant processes and studying nature and wildlife. Gardens require hard work and dedication, which teach children about responsibilities. Give young children their own responsibilities in the garden. It will be a great learning experience all growing season long!

Tips for Staying Healthy While Gardening

Be sun savvy! Prepare yourself for sun exposure by applying sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to all exposed skin. Wearing light colors will keep you cooler. You can protect your eyes by wearing a broad rimmed hat and sunglasses.

Stay hydrated outdoors by drinking plenty of water. Sugary drinks will actually rid your body of necessary fluids. Drink continually throughout the day, even if you are not very thirsty. Some common symptoms of dehydration are headaches, dizziness and fatigue.

Be aware of heatstroke or sunstroke caused by overexertion and lack of fluids in the body. If you are feeling woozy, dizzy, lethargic or flushed, stop what you are doing and get to a cool place. Drink plenty of fluids and take it easy for the rest of the day.

Be sure not to over-exert yourself. If you become sore, it may be time for a break.
