The Troy Gateway Initiative
“Improving Troy’s entranceways for visitors, potential investors and residents alike.”

The Troy Gateway Initiative is a community development project focused on improving the primary entrances to the City of Troy, with an emphasis on the six bridges that cross the Hudson River and serve as waterfront "gateways" to the city. By leveraging both public and private resources, the objective is to make landscape and other physical improvements that will enhance the overall appeal of Troy and Rensselaer County.

South Troy Mural Restoration

The Gateway Initiative has been working vigorously to restore the deteriorating mural at the intersection of Burden Avenue and Mill Street which until recently depicted the historic Burden’s Water Wheel.

The preparation phase for this new South Troy Mural is almost complete. The wall has been inspected by physical engineers and masons to determine the structural integrity, scaffolding and lifts have been donated, had the wall was sandblasted clean with in-kind services by Sage Brothers Painting in Troy. All of the work to date amounts to more than $20,000 in donated materials and services.

King Street Landscape Sponsorship

The Troy Gateway Initiative organized a partnership between Krumkill Nurseries from Slingerlands, NY and the First United Presbyterian Church in Troy to landscape the highly visible traffic island at the base of the Green Island Bridge at the intersection of River and Federal Streets. The project took place on Earthday 2001 and included the planting of junipers, azaleas and a flowering pear tree.

The landscaper provided the labor and at cost materials, and the church will be responsible for the continuing maintenance of the site.
