
Capital District Community Gardens
(CDCG) is a nonprofit service organization that has been helping local residents
improve their neighborhoods through community gardening and urban greening
programs for more than 30 years. Capital District Community Gardens manages 46
cooperative neighborhood gardens in Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady
Counties. CDCG’s other projects include: Municipal Tree Planting & Public
Landscaping Programs; Squash Hunger Program, which collects fresh produce for
food pantry distribution; and The Veggie Mobile, a fresh produce market on
wheels that serves inner-city residents by increasing the affordability and
accessibility of a healthy diet.
Interns and volunteers are
an integral part of the services we provide and as an intern you will get to
experience all aspects of a nonprofit working environment.
We ask for a minimum of 20 hours
per week to maximize your experience. CDCG welcomes high school, college and
graduate students and anyone else who has interest and time to commit.
We are seeking grads &
undergrads for unpaid part-time & full-time internships in the
following program areas:
GARDEN ASSISTANTS:
Assist our staff Garden Organizers with managing
and maintaining our 47 community gardens as well as coordinating our membership.
Perform outreach, correspond with gardeners on a regular basis, and prepare to
get your hands dirty.
COMMUNICATIONS / MARKETING / PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSISTANT:
Assist with event planning, media exposure, and
donor development. Help with the design, writing, and layout of a wide range of
materials used in our programs. Participate in planning and implementation of
education and fundraising events. This is a great fit for communications,
marketing or graphic design majors.
PRODUCE PROJECT ASSISTANT:
Assist in the development and operations of an
urban diversified vegetable farm. The Produce Project Intern will have the
opportunity to gain practical farming skills, learn about various methods of
season extension, and participate in the marketing of produce to stores and
restaurants. There will also be the opportunity to interact with and mentor high
school students who are active participants in our program. While some farming
or gardening experience is helpful, we are looking for an intern who is diligent
with record-keeping, has a keen attention to detail, and, most importantly, is
looking for ways to improve their urban landscape and connect with local
communities.
GROW CENTER/BUSINESS
ASSISTANT:
Assist in
the development of a small business plan which will be used in initiatives for
our Grow Center. Some activities include: researching the regional market and
learning about the importance of local food, and helping to develop a social &
business entrepreneurial plan which will be used to help local high school
students develop skills and experience in the job market. There is also the
opportunity for Architecture & Drafting majors to use their skills as we move
through the design and building phases of our future LEED certified building.
