Internship Opportunities

Capital District Community Gardens (CDCG) is a nonprofit service organization that has been helping local residents improve their neighborhoods through community gardening and urban greening programs for more than 30 years.  Capital District Community Gardens manages 46 cooperative neighborhood gardens in Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady Counties.  CDCG’s other projects include: Municipal Tree Planting & Public Landscaping Programs; Squash Hunger Program, which collects fresh produce for food pantry distribution; and The Veggie Mobile, a fresh produce market on wheels that serves inner-city residents by increasing the affordability and accessibility of a healthy diet.

Interns and volunteers are an integral part of the services we provide and as an intern you will get to experience all aspects of a nonprofit working environment.  We ask for a minimum of 20 hours per week to maximize your experience. CDCG welcomes high school, college and graduate students and anyone else who has interest and time to commit.

We are seeking grads & undergrads for unpaid part-time & full-time internships in the following program areas:

GARDEN ASSISTANTS:
Assist our staff Garden Organizers with managing and maintaining our 47 community gardens as well as coordinating our membership. Perform outreach, correspond with gardeners on a regular basis, and prepare to get your hands dirty.

COMMUNICATIONS / MARKETING / PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSISTANT:
Assist with event planning, media exposure, and donor development. Help with the design, writing, and layout of a wide range of materials used in our programs. Participate in planning and implementation of education and fundraising events. This is a great fit for communications, marketing or graphic design majors.

PRODUCE PROJECT ASSISTANT:
Assist in the development and operations of an urban diversified vegetable farm. The Produce Project Intern will have the opportunity to gain practical farming skills, learn about various methods of season extension, and participate in the marketing of produce to stores and restaurants. There will also be the opportunity to interact with and mentor high school students who are active participants in our program. While some farming or gardening experience is helpful, we are looking for an intern who is diligent with record-keeping, has a keen attention to detail, and, most importantly, is looking for ways to improve their urban landscape and connect with local communities.

GROW CENTER/BUSINESS ASSISTANT:
Assist in the development of a small business plan which will be used in initiatives for our Grow Center.  Some activities include: researching the regional market and learning about the importance of local food, and helping to develop a social & business entrepreneurial plan which will be used to help local high school students develop skills and experience in the job market.  There is also the opportunity for Architecture & Drafting majors to use their skills as we move through the design and building phases of our future LEED certified building.

Each internship presents a great opportunity for hands-on work experience!
