Capital District Community Gardens (CDCG) has a long history of helping communities improve their neighborhoods through a wide range of urban landscaping projects. The landscaping program focuses on urban greening projects that, without our efforts, would simply not be undertaken.
One example of our work is the landscaping done for the privately owned Gasholder House, a historic building in downtown Troy. The round brick structure was built in 1873 and was originally used to house coal-gas tanks. Although the building is on the National Historic Register, the land surrounding it remained overgrown, and graffiti covered parts of the exterior. In the summer and fall of 1997, working with local volunteers, Capital District Community Gardens transformed the grounds around the Gasholder House by designing and installing a low-maintenance planting of native trees, shrubs and vines.
